Holiday Shopping Goes Local and Independent
We just published a new commentary on the virtues of buying local for the holidays by AMIBA Co-Director Jeff Milchen. We’ve made it available for you to use in your region, either as-is, or by localizing to highlight your own local businesses. The piece notes a recent survey in which 35 percent of respondents preferred to do their in-person holiday shopping at small businesses – up sharply from 27 percent in 2012. This is another sign of the progress coming from the hard work so many of you are doing — keep it up!
Countering that positive message, BusinessWeek reported Sales Growth Stalls for Small Retailers. Let’s hope the survey is a better indicator this season for indies!
The Cost of “Free”
Of course, offering all these graphics and resources for free means we rely largely on voluntary contributions to keep producing them. If you’ve found these materials useful, please join the great people and businesses contributing to AMIBA by making a tax-deductible year-end contribution or joining as a business member. Thank you!

New Voice for Sales Tax Fairness
In our October newsletter, we announced the launch of Advocates for Independent Business, a collaboration between several independent trade associations and AMIBA to advance the collective interests of our constituents. AIB’s first public appearance came last week with our op-ed on internet sales tax reform landing in Bloomberg Businessweek. If you’re part of a trade group for indies that is not yet a member, please contact us to learn more.
