Local First of Durango, Colorado partners annually with the Durango Herald newspaper to create local gift wrap. Local First solicits designs from local artisans, arranges for judging (6 different artists’ designs are chosen), submits the final choices to the Durango Herald, and the Herald prints the gift wrap. The typical print run is 1,000 bundles — one bundle includes all 6 designs.
The Herald also prints a full sheet of the paper in the newspaper, one of each design over 6 days for the community to see and use. Each gift wrap sheet includes Local First’s name and logo.
The Durango Herald, as a sponsor, does not charge Local First for printing the gift wrap — it’s their contribution to the project. Local First’s overall project expenses (not including staff time) are around $100 for twine to tie around each bundle and Local First gift tags (what else would you use?). The Durango Herald also advertises the project for free in their publications.
Local First suggests a $5 donation per gift wrap bundle. Bundles are available at a selection of Local First member businesses which include retailers, arts supply, the local arts center, cafes and the newspaper. Local First reported making approximately $2000 on gift wrap sales. Perhaps more important is the great PR for both Local First and the newspaper.
