Independents Week Proclamations

Elected officials love to symbolically support small business, so we created proclamations of support for Independents Week tool to help you engage them, generate publicity, and build a positive working relationship that can lead to more substantive support. These proclamations are a great media hook to help you generate Independents Week coverage and participation.

EFFECTIVE TIPS

  1. Do your research on how to submit the request.
  2. Aim to get the proclamations submitted by late-May to your local council or governor’s office. This will give them time to consider it and your chances of securing a proclamation are excellent if your timing is right.
*NOTE: Don’t count on your city or state government to make a big deal out of this—they will only if you help them!
  3. Once accepted, ask your official if they’d welcome a photo opportunity or news conference to present the proclamation to the community. Perhaps feature a couple of your outstanding local business people. This can be a great kick-off event.
  4. Your community media event could occur in the mayor’s office, at a prominent independent business, or a public venue. Your state event is likely to take place in the governor’s office.
