What is Independents Week?
Independents Week is a nationwide campaign that aims to engage your local independent businesses and community members together in celebrating the spirit of entrepreneurism and individuality independent businesses embody. It's a chance to join with hundreds of other communities across the nation and celebrate the freedoms and opportunities independent businesses provide. Independents Week is an occasion to recognize these businesses for their time, talent, goods, and services, and contributions to the community--and to recognize local residents' role in shaping your community’s future.
Should I start an Independents Week in my community?
Put simply, YES! Independents Week is a positive and visible vehicle for bringing citizens in touch with local businesses to build relationships, awareness, and shift spending behavior. With a nationwide reach, you can be sure your community will be abuzz with excitement for getting engaged. By utilizing our free tips, suggestions and promotional templates, your local organizing is certain to have your community spreading the local love, and celebrating their independents!
Do I need to have an existing local group in place to participate?
No. You'll want to organize a steering committee to spread tasks and generate ideas, rather than shouldering the organizing duties yourself. If you've been considering launching an Independent Business Alliance or Buy Local Campaign in your community, Independents Week is a great vehicle for testing the idea! Also, many of the ideas presented are useful for an individual business wanting to participate -- but getting other businesses involved really makes a bigger impact.
Is organizing Independents Week difficult?
Organizing Independents Week in your community is simplified with our how-to guide, free templates for media outreach and promotional materials, and more! We also provide you with a handy planning guide to help you get ready for a celebration your community is sure to love.
Can you help me get started?
Absolutely! Just check out the Participant Information guide for guidelines on how to get started planning your community’s Independents Week. Also, never hesitate to call us here at AMIBA with any questions you may have about the campaign. We also request that you email us to let us know you are participating, which will allow us to help generate media attention for your effort!

Celebrate your Independents!
You'll find here graphics, suggested activities, "how-to" documents, and a proclamation you can adapt for your local mayor or state governor for ceremonious adoption--everything you need to participate! You can pick and choose what you would like to bring to your community, or devise your own ideas. Please pass along your ideas and we'll keep the toolbox growing!
You may customize all activities and graphics for local use. Note: designs were created using Adobe CS4 -- if you need them in a previous version, let us know! Please mention somewhere in your materials and press releases that you are working with the American Independent Business Alliance, a non-profit organization helping communities sustain their local independent businesses and keep opportunities alive for local entrepreneurs. (We also are happy to help you customize designs -- please inquire for our affordable rates.)
Have fun, and we're glad you're with us!
While we offer these materials for free, we ask the courtesy of groups and businesses using them to include a statement like this on their website and news releases: "Independents Week is part of a nationwide campaign facilitated by the American Independent Business Alliance, which offers this free library of activities and templates" (AMIBA.net is the url to print when hyperlinks are not possible).
